Giới từ trong tiếng anh là một điểm ngữ pháp đặc biệt quan trọng trong quá trình học tiếng Anh mà người học cần phải nắm chắc kiến thức. Đây là một mảng kiến thức cơ bản , tuy nhiên vẫn còn nhiều sự nhầm lẫn và gây khó khăn cho các bạn học.

Định nghĩa
Giới từ (prepositions) là những từ dùng để diễn tả mối quan hệ của cụm từ đứng phía sau nó với các thành phần khác trong câu.
E.g:
I come from Hanoi. Tôi đến từ Hà Nội.
Giới từ “from” diễn tả “Hà Nội” là địa điểm mà chúng ta muốn nhắc đến trong hành động “ come ” (đến)
Christmas Eve is the day before Christmas Day. Đêm Noel là ngày trước của ngày Giáng Sinh.
Giới từ “before” diễn tả mối quan hệ giữa “Christmas Eve” và “ Christmas Day”
- Từ 2 ví dụ trên, chúng ta cần rút ra kết luận là:
Giới từ luôn luôn phải có một cụm từ đi kèm phía sau nó, luôn có tân ngữ theo sau.
Giới từ và cụm từ theo sau nó tạo thành một cụm giới từ.
Vị Trí của Giới Từ
- preposition + noun phrase ( giới từ + cụm danh từ)
Most legends were handed down by word of mouth.
Hầu hết các truyền thuyết đều được truyền miệng.
- preposition + noun phrase ( giới từ + đại từ)
I’m falling in love with you.
Tớ thích cậu.
- preposition + adverb (giới từ + trạng từ)
It’s easy to see her from here.
Rất dễ nhìn thấy cô ấy từ vị trí này.
- preposition + adverb phrase: ( giới từ + cụm trạng từ)
Until quite recently, I was one of the richest men in the world.
Cho đến gần đây, tôi đã là một trong những người giàu nhất thế giới.
- preposition + V-ing
There is a great difference between doing and saying.
Nói và làm khác xa nhau.
- preposition + prepositional phrase ( giới từ + cụm giới từ)
We cannot proceed with the order until after the Christmas holidays.
Mãi đến sau kỳ nghỉ lễ Giáng sinh chúng tôi mới có thể tiếp tục thực hiện đơn đặt hàng.
- preposition + wh-clause
You don’t sound very interested in what they are saying.
Bạn có vẻ không hứng thú với những gì họ đang nói.
Phân Loại Giới Từ
Phân Loại Giới Từ Theo Hình Thức
- Giới từ đơn ( simple prepositions ): Là giới từ có một chữ :
In, at, on, for, from, to, under, over, with …
- Giới từ đôi ( double prepositions ): Là giới từ được tạo ra bằng cách hợp 2 giới từ đơn lại:
Into, onto, upon, without, within, underneath, throughout, from among …
- Giới từ kép ( compound prepositions ): Là giới từ được tạo thành bằng tiếp đầu ngữ a hoặc be:
About, among, across , amidst, above, against, Before, behind, beside, beyond, beneath, between, below…
- Giới từ do phân từ ( participle prepositions ):
According to ( tùy theo)
During ( trong khoảng ),
Owing to ( do ở ),
Pending ( trong khi) ,
Saving = save = except ( ngoại trừ ),
Notwithstanding ( mặc dù ) ,
Past ( hơn, qua )
Considering ( xét theo )
Concerning/ regarding /touching ( về vấn đề, về ),
Excepting = except ( ngoại trừ )
E.g:
We are satisfied regarding your statement.
Chúng tôi rất hài lòng với ý kiến của bạn.
- Cụm từ được dùng như giới từ: Giới từ loại này bao gồm cả một cụm từ :
Because of ( bởi vì )
By means of ( do, bằng cách)
In spite of (mặc dù)
In opposition to ( đối nghịch với )
On account of ( bởi vì )
In the place of ( thay vì )
In the event of ( nếu mà )….
With a view to ( với ý định để )
On behalf of ( thay mặt cho)
In view of ( xét về )
With reference to ( về vấn đề, liên hệ tới)
E.g:
– The load was lifted by means of a crane.
Hàng hóa được nâng lên bằng cần trục.
– On behalf of the students in the class, I wish you good health.
Thay mặt cho tất cả học sinh của lớp, em xin chúc cô được dồi dào sức khỏẻ
– In view of age, I am not very old.
Xét về mặt tuổi tác, tôi chưa già lắm
– I am writing with reference to the above order which I received yesterday.
Tôi viết thư khiếu nại về đơn hàng mà tôi đã nhận được hôm qua.
- Giới từ trá hình: Đây là nhóm giới từ được ẩn trong hình thức khác: At 10 o’clock ( o’ = of ): Lúc 10 giờ
Phân Loại Giới Từ theo Chức năng
- Giới Từ Chỉ Thời Gian:
At: chỉ thời điểm, nói về các kỳ nghỉ.
Ví dụ: at 5 o’clock, at night, at noon, at lunchtime, at sunset, at the weekend, at Christmas, at Easter….
In: chỉ một khoảng thời gian dài: tháng, mùa, năm, thế kỉ, các buổi trong ngày, khoảng thời gian bao lâu để làm gì.
Ví dụ: in September, in winter, in 2015, in 20th century, in the morning, in the afternoon, in one week, in one hour, ….
On: chỉ các ngày trong tuần hoặc ngày tháng trong năm, chỉ ngày trong kì nghỉ hay các buổi trong ngày cụ thể.
Ví dụ: on Monday, on Tuesday, on June 25th, on Christmas day, on Monday morning, on the weekend,…
Một số giới từ chỉ thời gian khác:
+ Since: kể từ + mốc thời gian (since 2013, ….)
+ For: trong/được… + khoảng thời gian (for 5 years, ….)
+ Ago: trước đây, cách đây (2 years ago, …)
+ Before: trước (before 2010, …)
+ After: sau khi (after I got married, …)
+ To: kém (quarter to ten (9:45), ….)
+ Past: hơn (ten past nine (9:10), …)
+ From – to / until / till: từ ….đến (from Monday to/till/until Friday, …)
+ During: trong suốt (during the war, ….)
- Giới Từ chỉ địa điểm
At: chỉ một địa điểm cụ thể, chỉ nơi làm việc, học tập
Ví dụ: at home, at the station, at the cinema, at the theater, at work, at school, at kindergarten, at hospital…
In: chỉ vị trí bên trong, thành phố, đất nước, hoặc dùng với phương tiện đi lại bằng xe hơi, taxi, chỉ phương hướng và một số cụm từ chỉ nơi chốn.
Ví dụ: in the room, in the building, in the park, in Paris, in France, in a car, in a taxi, in the South, in the North, in the middle, in the back/front of…
On: chỉ vị trí trên bề mặt, chỉ nơi chốn hoặc số tầng (nhà), phương tiện đi lại công cộng, cá nhân, dùng trong các cụm từ chỉ vị trí.
Ví dụ: on the table, on the wall, on the farm, on the floor, on a bus, on a train, on a bike, on the left, on the right, …
Các giới từ chỉ địa điểm khác:
+ By/next to/beside: bên cạnh (by/next to/beside the house, …)
+ Under: bên dưới và có tiếp xúc với bề mặt ở bên dưới (under the table, …)
+ Below: bên dưới và không tiếp xúc bề mặt bên dưới (below the surface, …)
+ Over: qua (over the bridge, over the wall, …)
+ Above: bên trên có khoảng cách (above my head, …)
+ Across: ngang qua (across the street, ….)
+ Through: xuyên qua (through the tunnel, ….)
